Once the children have graduated from the Little Wandle Phonics Scheme, they move on to a programme called Accelerated Reader. This programme encourages independent reading while still allowing teachers to monitor progress and comprehension. With Accelerated Reader, each child has their own personal goals and targets, ensuring a tailor-made and child-centered approach to progression in reading.

Using the AR system, teachers identify books that match each child's reading level, to provide an appropriate challenge that supports skill development. Children then independently select books within their level, allowing them to explore their personal interests while fostering a culture of reading for pleasure.

After finishing a book, children take a Star Quiz to check their understanding. This helps teachers to confirm that each child has read and comprehended the content of their book before they move on to their next one. After quizzing successfully, your child’s book is added to their account, working towards their AR targets and goals.

To promote a whole-school focus on reading, classes compete each term to see which has made the most progress on Accelerated Reader! Weekly class scores are shared in our newsletter, and the class with the highest progress at the end of the half-term earns extra playtime as a reward.
